(Knoxville) – A team of middle school Mathletes® from Jefferson Middle School, Knoxville won the local MATHCOUNTS competition. The top individual was Jack Li, also from Jefferson Middle School. Members of the winning team are: Jiin Chung, Mattie Lloyd, Jack Li, and Leon Zhang who were coached by Rosa Faulkner. The team will now advance to the State Competition, to be held in Nashville, TN on March 17, 2007. The second, third, and fourth place teams are from Robertsville Middle School, Oak Ridge, TN; and Greenway School, Knoxville, TN, and St. Mary’s School, Oak Ridge, TN, respectively. The following students will also be competing in the state competition in Nashville: Yajit Jain, Robertsville Middle School, Dalton Stewart, Cherokee Middle School, Patrick Tae, Robertsville Middle School, and Sam Worley, Robertsville Middle School. Participating schools were Cherokee Middle School, Clinton Middle School, Christian Academy of Knoxville, Greenway School, Gresham Middle School, Jefferson Middle School, Northwest Middle School, Robertsville Middle School, Saint Mary’s School, Thursday Morning Home School, Vine Middle magnet School, and West Valley Middle School. The 2008 competition will be held on Saturday, February 16 in the University Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Celebrating its 24th Anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. Over 6 million students across the U.S. have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program. Leadership and sponsorship of the local MATHCOUNTS program is provided by members of the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers. MATHCOUNTS’ Founding Sponsors are the CNA Foundation, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
